When even a double espresso or bold black brew won’t cut it anymore, try adding these five healthy ingredients to your cup of coffee for an extra energy boost.
Coconut oil is made up of mainly medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which your body can absorb more efficiently than other triglycerides, so they can easy be grabbed to use as fuel to produce energy. And because your body is metabolizing this fat faster, that means less of it sticks around to be stored in your body—on your belly, thighs, you name it.
You don’t have to eat a Paleo diet to enjoy the benefits of adding butter, specifically, grass-fed butter, to your morning cup of joe. This Bulletproof coffee, as Paleo dieters call it, is said to suppress hunger, promote weight loss, and improve energy and performance. While the research is still pending on those claims, Paleo supporters suggest meat, milk, and other products (such as butter) from grass-fed cows as they supposedlycontain higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Not to be confused with cocoa powder, this raw powder made from the cacao bean assists in stimulating a flow of endorphins, which could be just the boost you needed to get up and out the door for a morning run. This superfood is rich in magnesium and theobromine, the latter of which is a mild natural stimulant that may even help burn more fat. Plus, cacao also has caffeine in it as well as a chemical called epicatechin, which is said to improve blood flow to your brain and muscles.
If you like your java with a little kick, try a dash of cayenne pepper powder—that’s sure to wake you up! Cayenne contains a compound called capsaicin, which can help send your metabolism into overdrive and may also suppress your appetite. While the capsaicin works in the background to help you manage your weight, the heat from the cayenne will leave you feeling anything but sluggish.
The Middle Eastern spice cardamom has been said to increase circulation and boost energy, so it makes sense that it’s part of the blend that gives your favorite Chai tea its rich, fall-like flavor. Try adding cardamom to your morning pick-me-up by sprinkling a pinch of ground cardamon in your cup or grinding cardamom seeds with your coffee grounds.
